What to do now?
Firstly you have to recover the vehicle to an appropriate car repairer equipped with right diagnostic equipment to assess the situation and carry out the repair.
After diagnostic, they will say it’s either Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS) or Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) fault, or may advise on changing both units, and maybe even the keys.
If the column lock is on, some will insist on replacing the complete steering column!
The actual problem is the STEERING COLUMN LOCK MODULE.
That could mean a high cost and massive inconvenience, but we have a better solution for you!
If you notice that your steering lock is starting to fail, perhaps it’s taking a few attempts before the ignition switches on. Maybe you hear an unusual clicking noise coming from the steering lock when inserting the key or when removed from the ignition switch (EIS). If so, you should have it checked to avoid the inconvenience of being stuck with the car following a complete failure of the ESL. Replacement of Mercedes steering column lock, while the vehicle is still running, can be provided at a discounted cost if you book the service in advance and come to us at our premises in Finchley Central (N3 2QG).
